‘Absolute gamer’ Annie McCaffrey is Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

By Sean McBryan — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

It takes an entire team for there to be a zero in the loss column this late into the season.

Wyomissing senior Annie McCaffrey is the perfect embodiment of a player focused on only one result: winning.

McCaffrey rarely leads the team in scoring or rebounding playing alongside Division I prospect Amaya Stewart but her all-around game, leadership, and willingness to do anything for a ‘W’ is invaluable to the Spartans’ success.

Being second on the stat sheet behind Stewart looks pretty good, too.

The 5-9 forward and University of Massachusetts soccer commit had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists as the Spartans defeated Middletown 61-39 in the District 3 Class 4A quarterfinals last Thursday to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week.

“Cream of the crop rises to the top,” Wyomissing head coach Aaron Anders said. “That’s how you can explain Annie’s play.”

McCaffrey set the tone early as Middletown attempted to take Stewart out of the game. She was tenacious on the glass, grabbing 10 rebounds in the first half, and was a key defender in holding Middletown’s leading scorer Jayla Koser to six first-half points and 14 total, nearly three below her average.

McCaffrey is adept at finding Stewart in the post and doesn’t mind taking a backseat once the All-State selection embarks on one of her hot streaks. If picking up assists, crashing the glass, and shutting down the opposing team’s top player is what results in a win, that’s fine with her.

“She just plays her heart out,” Anders said. “She’s an absolute gamer.”

McCaffrey was selected All-Berks for the first time this season. She is second on the team in scoring at 7.7 points per game. She frequently grabs 10 or more rebounds per game to go with multiple blocks, steals, and assists.

The senior’s legacy has already been cemented with Wyomissing’s back-to-back Berks titles and in its District 3 title in 2023. The Spartans and McCaffrey have an opportunity to add to that legacy with another district title within reach.

This is the first time McCaffrey has been selected Player of the Week. She’s one of three Wyomissing players to win the award, along with Stewart, Alexis Hardy and Audrey Hurleman. Stewart has been selected four times over the past two seasons, and Hardy and Hurleman each once.

Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coach or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
