Spartans’ Amaya Stewart is season’s 1st Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

By Sean McBryan — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

Wyomissing junior Amaya Stewart has picked up where she left off last season.

The 6-1 forward has the Spartans undefeated at 3-0 after decisive wins over East Pennsboro (45-20), Conrad Weiser (47-20), and Muhlenberg (60-34).

Stewart, an first-team All-State selection as a sophomore, tied a career-high with 26 points in the win over the Muhls. She had a double-double against the Scouts with 15 points and 10 rebounds and scored 14 of her 18 points in the first quarter, helping the Spartans build a 29-2 lead, in the win against East Pennsboro.

Stewart’s 19.7 scoring average is second-highest in the league behind only Exeter’s Grace Reedy (23.3). Stewart has 775 career points.

Stewart’s game continues to evolve as she implements ballhandling and shooting into her repertoire. She had a fancy behind-the-back move into a no-look scoop pass assist to finish a coast-to-coast fast break against Weiser.

“I want to be versatile,” Stewart said after the win over Conrad Weiser. “Wherever the coach puts me, I want to be the best I can be at that spot.”

She has hit a team-high five 3’s and has become more comfortable letting it fly from long and midrange.

The improvements on the perimeter add to an already polished post game with strength, size, and footwork to overpower smaller defenders, crash the boards, and protect the rim.

“We hit two out of three levels last season,” said Stewart, who helped the Spartans win league and district championships. “We’re trying to make it to the third. We are reaching for more and the only way we can do it is if we get after it at practice and try hard in our games. We know we’re going to get everyone’s best game and that’s exactly what we want.”

Stewart earned Player of the Year honors and was selected Player of the Week twice last season. Wyomissing’s Alexis Hardy and Audrey Hurleman were also selected as Players of the Week last season.
