Gov. Mifflin’s Taylor Koenig: Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

By Sean McBryan — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

The snow and frigid weather halted many games last week but Taylor Koenig and Gov. Mifflin continued their hot streaks with a 52-30 win over Cedar Crest.

The sharpshooting Koenig drilled five 3’s and scored a game-high 19 points in the win to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week honors. The Mustangs improved to 9-6 and won their third straight game.

Koenig, a senior, increased her league-leading 3-point total to 41, ahead of Wilson’s Laila Jones (36) and Berks Catholic’s Madison Langdon (24). Koenig has 113 3’s in her career.

Koenig averages a team-high 14.5 points while also serving as a mentor for a freshmen starters Bella Super, Bridget Martin, and Brooklyn George.

“They look up to her,” Gov. Mifflin head coach Mike Clark said. “Taylor’s a great person on and off the floor. She’s a great leader.”

Koenig’s scoring average is sixth in the league behind Exeter’s Grace Reedy (21.7), Wyomissing’s Amaya Stewart (19.3), Jones (17.1), Langdon (16.6), and Oley Valley’s Morgan Snyder (15.1). She’s up to 721 career points, fifth of active players behind Reedy, Stewart, Snyder, and Brandywine Heights’ Addison Benner.

The Mustangs are currently slotted into the No. 3 seed for the BCIAA playoffs and the 12th and final seed in the District 3 Class 6A playoffs. They have an opportunity to solidify or improve those playoff positions in the final weeks of the season.

This is the first time Koenig has been selected Player of the Week and third time a Mifflin player has been selected. Shakyla Mayo (Albright) was selected twice in the 2021-22 season.

Players considered for Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coach or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
