Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week
Shakyla Mayo made a pair of game-winning plays without taking a shot to help Gov. Mifflin win the Hershey Holiday Tournament last week. That tells you a little about what kind of an all-around player the 5-7 junior is.
“She wants it, man,” said Mustangs coach Mike Clark. “You can see it when we get off the bus.”

Mayo took a charge in the final minute to help the Mustangs protect a 53-50 win over previously unbeaten Gettysburg in the opening round. She assisted on the game-winning basket in the 47-46 win over the host Trojans in the championship game.
That performance earned her Utilities Employees Credit Union girls basketball Player of the Week.
The clincher came with 15 seconds left in the title game and the Mustangs down a point. Mayo went to the floor for a loose ball, came up with it, then — while still on the floor – found Taylor Koenig with a bounce pass for the game-winning basket.
“That was the play,” said Clark. “It was amazing. For a high school player to make that play, not to get up and walk, and make that pass on the ground, that was amazing.”
Mayo finished with 14 points, eight rebounds and six assists as the Mustangs rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit.
In the win over Gettysburg she had 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists. In addition to taking a charge to force a turnover she played a key defensive role in the game.
“I put her on one of the best girls, and she did a good job down the stretch shutting her down,” said Clark.
Mayo is averaging a team-leading 12.3 points and has 12 3-pointers in eight games, tops on the team.
Mayo is the third Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of Week for the 2021-22 season. Berks League coaches nominate their top player each week. At the end of the season a Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of Year will be selected based on the weekly winners and nominees.
