Red Knights rally, beat Devon Prep to reclaim Holiday Tournament title

(This story will be updated with details and postgame reaction later tonight.)

Reading High got the payback it was looking for Wednesday night, defeating Devon Prep 58-50 to reclaim its own holiday tournament title.

Reading Holiday Tournament MVP Myles Grey scored a season-high 28 points to lead the unbeaten Red Knights to a victory one year after the Tide beat them in the same championship game.

The title is the 28th for the Red Knights in the 48 tournaments.

The Red Knights’ ninth straight victory looked in doubt when they fell behind by double digits in the opening quarter but Grey and Amier Burdine led a ballhawking defense that forced 24 turnovers and turned the game around.

The Red Knights (9-0) didn’t take the lead for good until Burdine’s steal led to a Grey layup to make it 32-31 midway through the third quarter. They dominated the second half, outscoring the Tide (7-2) 33-23.

Ruben Rodriguez scored 14 points and had nine rebounds and joined Grey and teammate Aris Rodriguez on the all-tournament team.

Ty Mishock, who scored 27 points, and Jacen Holloway of Devon Prep were also named to the all-tournament team.

Reading is 9-0 for the first time since 2007-08, when it won its first 30 games.

The Red Knights got off to a rough start, and trailed 7-0 and 15-2 in the early minutes. Mishock knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 12 points in the first quarter, helping the Tide to a 16-7 lead.

The Red Knights, behind the hot shooting of Grey, stormed back in the second quarter and pulled within two on Grey’s deep 3-pointer. He had 13 points at the half, with Devon Prep leading 27-25.

The Red Knights advanced to the title game with a 73-56 win over Central Dauphin Tuesday in a semifinal at the Giegle.

Devon Prep handed Reading its first loss last season after a 6-0 start; the Red Knights didn’t lose again until Jan. 16 at Upper Merion. It was Reading’s only home loss of the season.

Grey and the Red Knights were happy to see Devon Prep advance to the finals with a 66-56 win over Parkland. A year ago at this time the Tide took advantage of a depleated Reading roster to win the tournament, beating the Red Knights 75-71 in the finale.

That loss came with Reading starters Daniel Alcantara and Joey Chapman suspended and unavailable.

Devon Prep went on to win a PIAA Class 3A championship; the Red Knights went on to finish 26-4.

Parkland defeated Central Dauphin 63-43 in the consolation game.
