Record-setting Ruben Rodriguez is Wyomissing PT Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Offensive Player of the Week

Donyell Marshall, who scored more points as a senior than any player in Reading High basketball history, never scored 30 points or more in three straight games.

Neither did Lonnie Walker IV, the Red Knights’ all-time leading scorer.

Ruben Rodriguez, who knows nothing but winning games and setting records, did it last week with consecutive 30-point games in the Red Knights’ wins over Daniel Boone, Conrad Weiser and Harrisburg.

He scored 95 points over the three wins to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week honors for the first time this season and third time overall.

Rodriguez’s 95 points were nearly as many as the Red Knights allowed in the three games: 100.

That boosted his scoring average to 23.7, tops in the league. He also led the Berks Conference in scoring last season, at 19.8, when he was named Berks Player of the Year.

Only Marshall, who averaged 24.8 points in 1990-91, averaged more points per game for Reading than Rodriguez currently is. Bill Jankans, as a junior in 1964-65, also averaged 23.7 per game.

Rodriguez has scored 30 or more points six times this season (in 18 games), matching Marshall’s senior-season figure, and 10 times in his three seasons — two more than Marshall and three more than Walker.

Rodriguez set the program single-game mark last year with 50 points against Daniel Boone. Marshall’s career-high was 43, in a tremendous performance against a top Williamsport team. Walker’s best came agaisnt Carlisle in a District 3 quarterfinal his junior year, when he had 37.

Rodriguez has scored 35 or more five times.

He’s quickly moving up the all-time Berks scoring chart. With 1,717 career points he’s No. 13 all-time in Berks history and 111 points away from knocking Walker out of the No. 10 spot.

Rodriguez is currently No. 6 in scoring at Reading High, with 1,429 points. He trails only Walker IV (1,828), Marshall (1,581), Dick Nyquist (1,576), Stu Jackson (1,563) and Jordan Burdine (1,435).

Rodriguez played his freshman season at Muhlenberg, where he scored 288 points.

With four games left in the regular season, and the potential to play 11 more games in the postseason — if the Red Knights reach the Berks, District 3 and PIAA finals — Rodriguez could finish with 1,900 points and perhaps challenge the magical 2,000 mark.

Rodriguez is a three-time District 3 champ, a two-time All-State pick and has committed to play at Rider University.

Rodriguez is the third Reading High player to earn Wyomissing Phyical Therapy Player of the Week honors this season, following Yadiel Cruz and Myles Grey.
