Reading High to face nationally ranked Gonzaga in Bronx showcase
Minutes after its win over Devon Prep Wednesday in the Reading Holiday Tournament unbeaten Reading High was headed to New York for its next challenge.
The Red Knights will face Gonzaga College High School of Washington, D.C., Thursday in the Jumpman Holiday Classic at Gauchos Gym in the Bronx.
The tournament features some of the top high school teams and college prospects in the nation.
The Red Knights (9-0), off to their best start in 16 years, will face Gonzaga at 4:00 in the third of five games on Thursday’s schedule.
The three-day tournament, which concludes Thursday, includes 14 games.
Gonzaga, ranked No. 13 in the nation by maxpreps.com, has won its first 10 games. The Eagles have a pair of returning starters, including Top 50 sophomore Nykolas Lewis.
Gonzaga will be competing at the tournament for the third straight day. The Eagles defeated Hudson Catholic of New Jersey 80-51 on Tuesday and Roselle Catholic of New Jersey 76-66 Wednesday. Roselle was nationally ranked in the preseason.
Gonzaga is a national powerhouse, winning four WCAC championships, two DCSAA Championships and four Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament championships.
The Red Knights are led by two-time All-State pick Ruben Rodriguez, a Rider recruit who is averaging 24 points per games.
Senior guard Myles Grey is averaging 15.4 points after a season-high 28 Wednesday against Devon Prep.
