Danny Turchi of Oley Valley is Wyomissing PT Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

Danny Turchi was a key part of an ensemble cast last season that netted Oley Valley its first division title in 11 seasons. With four starters graduated from that team, Turchi was expected to take a bigger role for the Lynx.

He has.

The 6-1 senior is again Oley Valley’s leading scorer and came through with a big performance last week in a key 52-48 win against Berks III leader Fleetwood. He scored a team-high 15 points and hit four big free throws in the final minute, first to put the Lynx ahead, then to secure the win.

He has been named Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week.

“Danny’s taken charge of that (leadership) role,” said Lynx coach Matt Barrell. “He’s a very unselfish player, but he knows he needs to do it (and score more).”

Turchi is averaging a team-high 15.4 points, up more than four points from a season ago when he led the Lynx at 11.3. He’s also shooting much better. He’s made 75 percent of his team-leading 40 free throw attempts.

“He gets to the rim, he gets to the free throw line,” said Barrell. “We put him in the post, he drives, he slashes. He’s playing great defense, and he turns defense into offense. It’s a complete game.”

The Lynx are 7-3 after winning three straight games. They’re still in the hunt for a Berks Conference playoff spot and well-positioned for a return to the District 3 Class 4A Tournament.

They haven’t made it to districts in back-to-back seasons in over 20 years.

Turchi is not going to put up huge scoring numbers because he doesn’t take than many shots.

He has reached 20 point just once in his career — he had 21 this season against Conestoga Christian — but has been in double figure in nine of 10 games.

“He’s shooting the ball extremely well,” Barrell said. “When he gets ’em, he knocks ’em down. I don’t run that many sets for him. Everything (he gets) comes within the flow of the offense.”

Turchi is also an outstanding soccer player. He was an All-Berks pick who was second on the team with 17 goals and nine assists. He helped the Lynx reach the Berks and District 3 Class 2A championship games.

Turchi is the fifth Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week for the 2021-22 season, and the first for Oley Valley.

Berks Conference coaches nominate their top players each week. At the end of the season a Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Year will be selected.

  • Dec. 20: Matt Harley, Gov. Mifflin
