With the Berks Girls League roughly halfway through the regular seasons it’s a good time to take a peek at division races, leading scorers, district playoff potential, team statistics, and more.

Division updates

Wilson, Exeter, Wyomissing, and Oley Valley have the early jump on division titles.

The Bulldogs (5-0, 11-1) jumped out to a 7-0 getaway before a six-point loss to Dallastown. They’re currently on a four-game winning streak. Defending Berks I champ Berks Catholic (3-1, 5-6), Reading High (3-2, 5-8), Gov. Mifflin (2-3, 6-6), and Muhlenberg (0-5, 3-10) are in chase mode in Berks I.

In Berks II, Exeter (3-1, 9-3) is off and running to secure its second consecutive division title after two straight victories over division opponents Twin Valley (2-2, 4-8) and Conrad Weiser (1-3, 4-8). Daniel Boone (1-3, 5-8) is technically third in the division at the moment with a win over the Scouts in mid-December.

Defending Berks champion Wyomissing (4-0, 12-0) is again leading the pack in Berks III with Schuylkill Valley (3-1, 9-5), Hamburg (2-2, 5-7) and Fleetwood (0-4, 0-10) trying to move up.

Oley Valley (5-0, 12-1) is in great position to clinch its first division title since 2013-14. Brandywine Heights (3-2, 7-5) has won the Berks IV title every season since the Berks Girls League expanded to four divisions in 2020. Tulpehocken (2-3, 2-11), Kutztown (1-4, 1-11), and Antietam (0-4, 1-11).

District power rankings

Oley Valley (No. 4) and Brandywine Heights (No. 6) would qualify in the six-team District 3 Class 3A field if the tournament began today. The Lynx would host York Catholic and the Bullets would travel to Pequea Valley. Lancaster Catholic and Columbia would get first-round byes.

Wyomissing (No. 2), Berks Catholic (No. 8), and Schuylkill Valley (No. 10) would qualify in 4A’s 10-team field. The Spartans would get a first-round bye; the Saints would host Trinity; and the Panthers would travel to Big Spring.

Exeter (No. 7) would qualify for 5A’s 14-team field and host Manheim Central.

Wilson (No. 5) would qualify in 6A’s 12-team field and host McCaskey.

Raiders update

Twin Valley co-head coaches Deana Gorgone and Matt Hahn picked up their first career coaching victory in a 37-21 win over Daniel Boone Monday. They took over when former head coach Doug Myer abruptly resigned Jan. 4.

The win moved Twin Valley to 2-2 in Berks II and 4-8 overall to keep pace with division-leading Exeter.

Gorgone was in the same high school class as Twin Valley great Peyton McDaniel; she logged varsity minutes as a junior and senior as the Raiders won two state playoff games.

Who’s next to reach 1K?

Exeter senior Grace Reedy became the first Berks girl this season to eclipse 1,000 points.

Berks Catholic’s Caraline Herb (Chestnut Hill College) was the only player to reach the mark last season; 2023 Fleetwood grad Alexis Hess (Kansas State) had passed the mark in her junior season.

Wyomissing junior Amaya Stewart currently sits at 941 points and could reach the mark this week as the Spartans play West York Wednesday, Antietam Thursday and Middletown Saturday.

Oley Valley senior Morgan Snyder (837) and Brandywine Heights junior Addison Benner (831) are next in line.
