Recruiting interest beginning to pick up for Ruben Rodriguez

Ruben Rodriguez’s play for Team Puerto Rico in the FIBA Americas Championship and at other spring stops have definitely stirred interest among college basketball coaches.

The rising senior from Reading High picked up his fifth scholarship offer Wednesday, from Fairleigh Dickinson. That comes on the heels of an offer last week from Rider.

The two-time All-State pick also has offers from St. Peter’s, Jacksonville and Drexel.

The 6-1 guard was one of Puerto Rico’s top players in the tournament, averaging 9.3 points, 7.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists. He led the team in steals.

Rodriguez was a first-team All-State pick as sophomore after leading Reading High to PIAA Class 6A title.

He took his game up a notch this season, on both the offensive and defensive ends. He was named Berks Player of the Year after averaging a Berks-high 19.8 points per game, shooting 74.3 percent from the foul line and making 35 3-pointers.

He topped 1,000 points at midseason, finished with 1,291 and could end up in the 1,800-point range with a productive senior season.

Rodriguez led the Red Knights to the District 3 Class 6A championship this season, his third district title in three year; as a freshman he was the starting point guard on Muhlenberg’s Class 5A championship team.

Robert Morris and William & Mary are among the other schools reportedly showing interest in Rodriguez.
