Danny Turchi of Oley Valley is Wyomissing PT Player of the Week

Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week

Two days after his biggest game as a high school basketball player, Danny Turchi experienced his most memorable. The Oley Valley senior scored his 1,000th career point Saturday against Spring-Ford, and he was able to do it with twin brothers David and Jonathan on the floor with him.

“It was just an awesome day to celebrate a great kid,” said Lynx coach Matt Barrell. “We are all so proud of him. Saturday was the culmination of a great four years.”

The milestone came on the heels of a career-high 37-point performance against Annville-Cleona and has earned Turchi Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week honors.

Turchi became the ninth player in program history to score 1,000 points and the first since Sebastian Williamson in 2016.

Time was running out for Turchi. Saturday’s game was the last of the regular season for the Lynx.

They are assured now of just one more game, in the District 3 Tournament, but that berth didn’t become official until Sunday.

“We didn’t even start talking about (the possibility) until about three weeks ago,” Barrell said. “I just wanted him to play, be the leader he is on the floor and figured it would shake out for the best.”

His breakout game against Annville-Cleona helped put him on the cusp of the milestone.

He had 23 points by halftime; prior to that his career-high had been 25 points, in a 58-44 win over Pequea Valley last week.

“The 37-point game was manufactured by him,” Barrell said. “We called our normal sets for him (and) he did it within the flow of the offense, and had a few steals for layups. He hit a buzzer-beater 3 at the end of the half to give him 23, and then we could joke about it at half a little bit. The second half was his and the team really had his back and he did as much as he could. He was exhausted.”

Turchi was a key part of an ensemble cast last season that netted Oley Valley its first division title in 11 seasons. With four starters graduated from that team, Turchi was expected to take a bigger role for the Lynx, and he has. He is leading the Lynx in scoring at 18.4 per game, fourth-highest in the league.

Turchi is the first player to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week honors twice this season. He was also selected Jan. 17.
