Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week
Has anyone ever had a better week playing basketball than Ruben Rodriguez?
The junior guard set Reading High’s single-games scoring record with 50 points in a win over Daniel Boone.
Two nights later he scored a game-high 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, scored the go-ahead basket and was named Reading’s MVP in a 71-66 win over Vertical Academy.
Saturday he hit a pair of buzzer-beaters, made a couple of game-changing plays and scored a game-high 19 points in a 64-58 win over Archbishop Wood, completing a 4-0 week for the Red Knights.
That was more than enough to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy boys basketball Player of the Week.
“Ruben is a born winner,” said Reading coach Rick Perez. “(He) does whatever it takes to keep the game going. He plays with such joy and is just out there having fun.”
Rodriguez is averaging a team-best 19.2 points, third-best in the league.
He has 1,025 career points and on pace to score more than 1,800 in his career.
He averaged a team-leading 14.6 points per game last season in leading the Red Knights to a 26-2 record and the District 3 and PIAA Class 6A championships. He earned both All-Berks and All-State first-team honors.
As a freshman he was the starting point guard and averaged 10.3 points for Muhlenberg, which won the District 3 Class 5A championship — its first district title. He transferred to Reading High following that season and reunited with Myles Grey, Amier Burdine and the other players he grew up playing with in Reading’s feeder system.
Rodriguez is the sixth Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week for the 2021-22 season and the second from Reading High. Myles Grey was selected two weeks ago.
Berks Conference coaches nominate their top players each week. At the end of the season a Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Year will be selected.
