Wyomissing’s Audrey Hurleman continued her menacing defensive play as the Spartans allowed only 53 points across two games last week on their way to winning their first District 3 Class 4A title.
Hurleman’s aggressive defense at the top of Wyomissing’s zone defense was key in the Spartans defeating Berks Catholic 24-23 Monday in the semifinals and Delone Catholic 35-30 Thursday in the district championship at Giant Center.
The sophomore earns Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week for the first time.
Hurleman, an all-division pick, had four points and five rebounds in the semifinal victory and 10 points and four rebounds in the championship.
Hurleman is a three-sport athlete who plays lacrosse and was an All-Berks pick on the Spartans BCIAA championship soccer team last fall.
Her athleticism is evident every time she’s on the hardwood. Opposing offenses must be cognizant of where she is or risk having the ball stolen.

“She absolutely just disrupts,” Wyomissing head coach Aaron Anders said. “Audrey just makes people miserable. We call her ‘Captain Chaos’ because she makes it next-to-impossible to start an offense.”
Wyomissing has only allowed 28.3 points per game this season.
Hurleman also doesn’t mind doing the dirty work, such as diving on the floor for loose balls or putting her body on the line to take a charge.
That unselfishness has been crucial in taking the Spartans (26-2) to heights they’ve never reached before.
The Berks Girls League and District 3 championships are the first in program history.
The Spartans will host a state playoff game Saturday against Parkway Center City at 3.
Hurleman is the third Wyomissing player and its fourth overall selection for Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors. Alexis Hardy was selected in December and Amaya Stewart was picked twice last month..
