Wyomissing’s Amaya Stewart, Fleetwood’s Alexis Hess named to All-State first team

Wyomissing sophomore Amaya Stewart and Fleetwood senior Alexis Hess have been named to the Pennsylvania Sportswriters All-State Class 4A first team.

Stewart, a 6-1 sophomore, led Wyomissing to its first league and District 3 championships and to a 28-3 record. The Spartans advanced to the PIAA Class 4A semifinals for the first time since 2004.

Stewart averaged 15.3 points for the season and took her game to a new level in the postseason. She averaged 16.2 points and 10.9 rebounds throughout nine county, district, and state playoff games, eight of which Wyomissing won.

Stewart was chosen as MikeDragoSports.com Berks girls basketball Player of the Year earlier this month.

Joining Stewart on All-State Class 4A first team is Fleetwood senior and Kansas State commit Alexis Hess, who is no stranger to the All-State accolades.

Hess averaged 17.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists this season.

Hess, a 6-1 guard, was named to the third team as a sophomore and made the first team as a junior, the first time a Berks Girls League player had been named to the top All-State team since Twin Valley’s Peyton McDaniel in 2020.

Hess scored 1,403 career points at Fleetwood and is a four-time All-Berks selection.

Hess and Stewart are the only Berks girls to be named All-State.

Fleetwood and Wyomissing matched up twice during the regular season as Berks Girls League Division III opponents. Stewart scored 17 and Hess six in the Spartans 55-22 victory in Jan. and Stewart had 26 and Hess seven in the Spartans 54-20 win in Feb. Wyomissing finished 11-0, 28-3 and Fleetwood 6-5, 11-10.

The Berks duo is joined on the Class 4A first team by Lansdale Catholic and Saint Joe’s commit Gabby Casey, a 5-10 senior who averaged 21.5 points; Blackhawk 5-10 junior Alena Fusetti, who averaged 17.4 points; Jersey Shore 6-0 sophomore Peyton Dincher, who averaged 20.8 points; North Catholic 5-11 junior Alayna Rocco, who averaged 17.6 points; and Audenreid 5-10 sophomore Shayla Smith, who averaged 24.8 points.

Casey won 4A Player of the Year and Lansdale Catholic head coach Eric Gidney won Coach of the Year.
