Wyomissing Spartans headed to PIAA’s Elite Eight

COATESVILLE — Amaya Stewart scored 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half as Wyomissing flipped a five-point halftime deficit into a 40-33 victory over Neumann-Goretti in the PIAA Class 4A girls basketball tournament second round Wednesday at Coatesville High School.
The District 3 champion Spartans (28-2) advance to face District 7 champion North Catholic, a 51-34 winner over Harbor Creek, in the state quarterfinals Saturday at a time and location to be determined.
The District 12 third-place Saints (11-15) held the lead for the majority of the first half and finished the second quarter on an 8-0 spurt behind a three-point play by sophomore guard Amya Scott, a 3-pointer from senior Amirah Hackney, and a bucket by senior Sanej Tyler.
Neumann-Goretti led 19-14 at halftime.
Wyomissing’s clear size advantage with the 6-1 Stewart and 5-8 forwards Annie McCaffrey and Audrey Hurleman began to take its toll in the second half.
Stewart had 10 points in the third quarter as the Spartans cut the deficit to 27-26 heading to the fourth.

Stewart’s offensive rebound and putback for the first points of the fourth quarter gave Wyomissing its first lead since 3:29 in the second quarter.
The Spartans ended the game on a 12-6 run.
Stewart finished with 11 rebounds, McCaffrey had six points and 10 rebounds, and Hurleman had three points and six rebounds. The Spartans outrebounded the Saints by 17.
Freshman Kamora Berry led Neumann-Goretti with nine points and sophomore Carryn Easley had eight points, four assists, and four rebounds.
