Wyomissing PT Player of the Week Beau Fegely never imagined he’d score 4 touchdowns in first game
Beau Fegely wasn’t expecting to carry the load out of the backfield in Fleetwood’s season-opener. He had never played running back in a game; Tigers coach Steve Pangburn considered him a “change of pace” type runner who would complement lead back Nate Kummerer.
It’s safe to say Fegely changed the pace for the Tigers: He rushed for 224 yards and four touchdowns in a wild 54-34 win over Kutztown to earn Wyomissing Physical Therapy Player of the Week.
He began the game playing every other series at running back but when Kummerer began to cramp up in the third quarter Fegely took over and ran for three second-half TDs, helping break open a close game.
“We didn’t know if Nate was going to be able to come back and play, so we needed somebody to step up,” said the 5-8, 165-pound junior. “That’s when I got most of my yards.”
The breakout game came as a surprise to Fegely, as well as to his father Mel, the Tigers’ running backs coach and a former record-setting tailback at Muhlenberg.
Mel has coached Beau since his flag football days in the Oley youth program but always used him at quarterback. When Beau arrived in high school he wasn’t big enough to take the constant pounding at running back, so he was used as a slot receiver.
He never got a touch on offense last year but after adding 35 pounds through offseason workouts his coaches saw a different player at camp this summer. He moved into the running back rotation.
No one imagined the Fegely genes would kick in as they did.
“His first game ever (at running back),” said Mel, who had similar games with Muhlenberg from 1991-93, but not in his debut.

Mel scored four touchdowns in his final high school game, in a 27-0 win over – coincidentally – Kutztown. He topped 200 yards just once, going for 240 against Salisbury as a senior.
Mel set Muhlenberg records for rushing yards in a season and career and played on three straight Inter-County League championship teams.
Beau’s never seen any film of his dad running with the ball but he’s apparently got some of the same moves.
“I think I’m fast enough to be an elusive back but I’m not scared to lower the shoulder on somebody, either,” Beau said. “(My dad) harps on me about my vision and about trusting my line and trusting my ability.”
Fegely scored his first touchdown Friday on a 4-yard run in the first quarter.
“I just trusted my gut and followed the line and I knew I was getting in,” he said. “It was the first time I had ever scored a touchdown playing running back, so it was really nice. I just looked in the stands and everybody was cheering; it was a surreal moment.”
His final score, a 53-yard run late in the third quarter, gave Fleetwood a 42-21 lead.
“It was an outside zone,” he said. “Trey McGinney (a freshman wide receiver) found the safety and blocked him inside and I just raced toward the end zone. As soon as I saw Trey seal that safety I knew it was a touchdown.”
It didn’t strike him at the moment that he had just scored four touchdowns.
“I wasn’t really thinking (about that),” he said. “I was just living in the moment with my team. Then after the game I started to think about it. It was just a good night going to bed knowing I helped my team as much as I could.”
