Fleetwood put on an impressive offensive display and took advantage of five Kutztown turnovers on the way to a 54-34 season-opening, non-league victory Friday night at Tigers Stadium.
The Tigers speedy junior running back Beau Fegely finished with 224 yards rushing on 19 attempts (11.8 yards per carry) and four touchdowns. Fegely scored on runs of 4, 14, 53 and 37 yards. Junior Nathan Kummerer rushed 10 times for 74 yards, including a 5-yard TD run in he second quarter.
Fleetwood head coach Steve Pangburn credited the team’s offensive line for its rushing success.
Bryce Ryan made a difference on offense too, catching four Chase McMonagle passes for 63 yards.
McMonagle threw for three touchdowns and completed 9-of-17 passes for 109 yards.
Kutztown turned the ball over on its opening possession, the first of five fumbles recovered by the Tigers, including two by Ryan.
“He’s gonna do special things, whether that’s offensively or defensively,” Pangburn said of Ryan. “Good all-around football player.”

Fleetwood scored 13 points to start the third quarter, opening a 34-14 advantage.
The Cougars rushed for 369 yards and four touchdowns on 55 attempts. Mason Sherry rushed for 161 yards; Ryan Walters had 118.
Cougars quarterback Wyatt Stoess completed four of his five attempts for 110 yards and a last-second 60-yard touchdown to Walters.
The Cougars scored touchdowns on the five possessions in which they didn’t fumble. they had more total yards and more first downs.
