HERSHEY — The Wyomissing Spartans successfully defended their District 3 Class 4A championship Thursday afternoon and made history in the process.

The second-seeded Spartans became the first Berks Girls League team to win a district championship with a perfect record, turning back top-seeded Delone Catholic 45-32 at Giant Center.

The Spartans got 14 points and 18 rebounds, both game-highs, from All-State center Amaya Stewart.

Stewart and the Spartans (28-0) dominated the boards and limited the Squirettes (22-3) to 19 points through three quarters. Wyomissing kept Delone without a rebound for the first 8 1/2 minutes of the game, grabbing the first 13 missed shots.

Stewart was part of a balanced scoring effort as Audrey Hurleman had 10 points, to go with five assists and three steals, and Annie McCaffrey had eight points, to go with nine rebounds and four assists.

Delone, pulling out its fullcourt press, got as close as 37-28 with 4 1/2 minutes left before the Spartans pulled away, as McCaffrey, Stewart and finally Hurleman scored on press-breakers.

Wyomissing advances to the PIAA Tourament March 9 and will face the District 12 fifth-place team, likely at a Berks County site.

Wyomissing is the just the fourth Berks girls basketball team to repeat as a district champ, following Wilson in 1997-98, Central Catholic in 2005-06 and Wilson in 2013-14.

The Spartans became just the second team in Berks Girls League basketball history to win their first 28 games; they ar two wins away from joining the 1990 Daniel Boone Blazers and 1991 Gov. MIfflin Mustangs as the only 30-game winners in Berks Girls League history.

Wyomissing completely controlled the action in the early minutes and threatened to run away with the game, building a 13-5 lead. Only seven first-quarter turnovers kept them from running up a double-digit lead.

The Spartans had a 22-5 rebounding lead at the half and finished with a commanding 36-16 advantage.

The Squirettes pulled into a 13-13 tie when Megan Jacoby hit a pull-up jumper two minutes into the second quarter but they did not score again, the Spartans ending the half on a 9-0 run to lead 22-13. They maintained their lead the rest of the way.
