If was tough not to pick Gov. Mifflin’s Bryce Detwiler as Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week since no one was able to get him out last week.
The sophomore third baseman/pitcher went 5-for-5 at the plate with a pair of homers, a double and two walks in two games. He also drove in seven runs, scored four times and stole a base.
Oh, and he pitched a shutout. More on that later. First, his work with the bat.
He hit a booming home run in the first inning and drove in four runs in the Mustangs’ biggest game of the season to date, an 8-0 win over Berks I rival Exeter – the only team to beat Mifflin in the regular season last year. He finished 3-for-3.
He homered again and drove in three runs in a 12-0 crossover win against Fleetwood.
Detwiler’s homer against Exeter – estimated to travel nearly 400 feet – set the tone for the Mustangs.
“Bryce had a tremendous freshman season, but has worked extremely hard to get even better this year,” said Mifflin coach Chris Hole. ”He continues to hit well to all fields, but has demonstrated even more power this season.”
For the season, Detwiler is batting .536 with nine extra-base hits, including three homers. With leadoff batter Tyler Minick, the reigning Berks Player of the Year, on base almost all the time Detwiler often comes up with a runner, or more, in scoring position, and he’s been coming through.

“He has become the perfect complement to Tyler, as he hits behind him in our lineup and often sees some good pitches to hit in RBI opportunities,” said Hole.
“Bryce is a patient hitter and has a great eye. He’s very disciplined at the plate, and that leads to a high on-base average.”
He generally plays third base but slides over to shortstop when Minick is on the mound. He’ll likely take over that spot next season after Minick graduates.
He’s seeing more time on the mound this season and has been dominant there, too.
He’s 3-0 with an 0.50 ERA and 11 strikeouts over 14 innings. Opposing batters are hitting just .196 off him.
Detwiler earned all-division honors as a freshman when he batted .339 with a .461 on-base percentage, a .441 slugging average and a .902 on-base percentage. He drove in 16 runs and scored 16 runs in 22 games.
This is Detwiler’s second Player of the Week selection this season. He was also the Week 1 selction. Players considered for Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coaches or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
