The comeback was far from artistic, one crammed with walks, errors – even a batter hit by a pitch with the bases loaded – but that mattered little to Travis Jenkins.
The Gov. Mifflin junior used his fourth hit of the game, an RBI single in the seventh, to give the Mustangs a wild 11-10 walk-off victory over Fleetwood in a Berks League crossover game Wednesday at Rulon Griffith Field.
The Mustangs (2-1 Berks I, 5-1) needed four seventh-inning runs to pull it out and completed the comeback with just one hit. The Tigers (1-1 Berks II, 6-2) greased the skids with four seventh-inning walks and an error.
The shootout between two of the league’s top teams was unexpected: Fleetwood had allowed just 17 runs in its first seven games; Mifflin had allowed just nine runs in its first five.
The Mustangs tied it 10-10 in the seventh when Branson Adams was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. One batter later Jenkins completed his 4-for-5 day with his second RBI. He had half his team’s hits — including a pair of doubles — and is now batting .529 with eight RBIs and four doubles in six games.
Bryce Detwiler, a University of Connecticut recruit, drew three walks, tripled, drove in two runs and scored twice for Mifflin.
Sophomore RJ Weaver, who pitched a perfect seventh, earned his first varsity win. Detwiler, who pitched the first 5 2/3 innings, allowed 12 hits and a career-high 10 runs but seven of them were unearned, as his team committed three errors.
Fleetwood committed four errors, leading to three unearned runs. The Tigers, who had been allowing less than three runs per game, also walked eight batters and were charged with two passed balls and a wild pitch.
The Tigers got their hacks in against the defending Berks champs. Aiden Soumas and Nate Seidel each had two hits and three RBIs. Brayden Sobjak went 3-for-4 and scored three runs.
Soumas’ two-run single in the fifth put Fleetwood up 4-3.
The Mustangs scored four times in the fifth to take a 7-6 lead. Detwiler hit an RBI triple and scored on a throwing error on the play. Matt Koehler tied it with an RBI on a fielders choice. Mifflin took the lead on a passed ball.
Soumas had an RBI single and Seidel a two-run single in a four-run sixth that put the Tigers on top 10-7.
