Top Players to Watch in Berks IV baseball


Top players to watch in Division IV of the Berks Baseball League

(listed in alphabetical order)

Jared Baer, Tulpehocken

Junior provides strength at the plate and behind it as Trojans’ starting catcher.

Earned all-division honors after batting team-best .289 with just five strikeouts in 14 games. Led team with five steals.

Also pitched in six games, compiling 2.80 ERA.

Nick Becker, Tulpehocken

Emerged as staff’s top pitcher, posting a 1.42 ERA and 2-1 record over six appearances. He allowed 20 hits over 24 2/3 innings.

Expected to be one of the Trojans’ top hitters, as well.

Wes Campbell, Tulpehocken

Trojans’ leadoff hitter earned all-division honors as a junior by batting .267, second on the team, with nine RBIs and six runs scored in 14 games. Second on the team in slugging, third in OPS. Made seven appearances on the mound, striking out 17 over 18 1/3 innings.

Colin Diehl, Kutztown

Right fielder provided production from the bottom of the lineup as a sophomore, driving in a a team-leading 23 runs in 26 games, tops on the team and sixth in the league, for the District 3 champs.

Batted .368, drew 10 walks and reached five times on hit-by-pitches to push his on-base percentage to .456, fifth-best in a lineup filled with guys adept at reaching base.

Earned two wins out of the bullpen last season, striking out 11 over 13 1/3 innings.

Nate Fronheiser, Brandywine Heights

Earned all-division honors as a junior after leading team with 5-2 record on the mound and compiling .500 on-base percentage, tied for 10th in the league.

Keen eye at the plate led to team-best 12 walks and just eight strikeouts. Batted .396. slugged .528 and drove in 18 runs in 20 games. Had four doubles and a homer.

Struck out 36 over 32 innings in compiling a 2.19 ERA over eight appearances. Held opposing batters to .208 average.

Colten Mathias, Kutztown

Sophomore anchored staff in the regular season as senior ace Bryce Schafer was returning from injury and pitched team-leading 50 2/3 innings, fourth-most in the league.

Went team-best 6-2 on the mound and picked up key wins in district semifinal against Newport and PIAA opener over Elk Lake.

Finished with sparkling 1.52 ERA, second-best in the league behind Picher of the Year Dalton Follweiler, and struck out 40 with just 18 walks.

Now a junior, he’ll take the ball in the Cougars’ biggest games this season.

Kole Schuler, Kutztown

All-Division third baseman batted team-best .418, eighth-best in the league, and scored 27 runs out of the two-hole for the District 3 champion Cougars.

Drove in 21 runs in 24 games, ninth-best in the league, with a .457 on-base percentage, seven doubles and a .951 OPS.  Led Berks IV champs with 35 and 11 stolen bases as a junior.
