Team of the Day: Wyomissing Spartans

2024 Berks football coverage

The Wyomissing High Warriors and West Reading Cowboys each enjoyed great, albeit brief, football histories. Their offspring, the Wyomissing Spartans, have taken that success to new heights, including a PIAA championship in 2012 and a reputation as one of the best small-school programs in the state.

The Spartans have posted winning marks in 45 of their 56 seasons since their introduction in 1968 (following the merger of Wyomissing High and West Reading) and they only seem to be getting better. They haven’t finished below .500 only once since 1977.

Last season they became the first Berks team to win five straight District 3 championships; it was their Berks-leading 12th overall. A year earlier they recorded their 11th perfect regular season and fourth in a row.

In 2012 they became the first Berks football team to win 16 games, finishing a perfect season with a win over Aliquippa in the PIAA Class 2A championship game.

In 2020 and 2021 they became they first Berks football team to reach back-to-back PIAA championship games. During those season they started what would become a Berks-record 41-game regular season winning streak.

Their head coach, Bob Wolfrum, is an icon in Pennsylvania coaching circles. His 362 victories over 37 season are second-most among active coaches in the state. Last year Wyomissing’s home field was renamed in his honor: Bob Wolfrum Field.

Wolfrum is among 11 Wyomissing inductees in the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame. He’s joined by a pair of former NFL players, Ross Tucker and Matt Lytle, former coaches Jack Paris, Al Silveri, and Bill Hartman, and players such as Nolan McCready, Dave Cardy, and Marty Stallone.
