Team of the Day: Wyomissing Spartans
2024 Berks football coverage
presented by UECU

The Wyomissing Spartans have won so consistently in recent decades they almost make it look too easy. They’ve won 10 or more games in four straight seasons and eight times over the last 11 years.
Since 2000 they have won 82 percent of their games, own the highest winning percentage among all District 3 teams and rank No. 7 among all programs in the state. Wyomissing has claimed a PIAA title and nine district championships during the 2000’s.
The Spartans have had just one losing record over the past 25 seasons (2004). They’ve had winning records in 23 of the last 25 seasons, capped by their 16-0 run and PIAA Class AA championship in 2012.
They authored an incredible run from 2019-2022 which saw them go 49-4 and reach back-to-back PIAA championships. They’ve gone 50-7 over the last four years and 59-8 over the last five. In 2023 they became the first Berks team to win five straight district titles.
Bob Wolfrum has known just one losing season in his 39 years as Spartans head coach; with 382 victories he ranks No. 2 among active coaches in the state, behind only Jim Roth of Southern Columbia. Wolfrum is tied for No. 6 all-time in state history.

The Spartans have posted winning marks in 46 of their 57 seasons since their introduction in 1968 (following the merger of Wyomissing High and West Reading) and they only seem to be getting better. They haven’t finished below .500 only once since 1977.
In 2023 they won their Berks-leading 12th district championship. A year earlier they recorded their 11th perfect regular season and fourth in a row.
In 2012 they became the first Berks football team to win 16 games, finishing a perfect season with a win over Aliquippa in the PIAA Class 2A championship game.
In 2020 and 2021 they became the first Berks football team to reach back-to-back PIAA championship games. During those seasons they started what would become a Berks-record 41-game regular season winning streak. They set a Berks record last season, extending their home winning streak to 36 games.
Wolfrum is an icon in Pennsylvania coaching circles. In 2023 Wyomissing’s home field was renamed in his honor. He is among 12 Wyomissing inductees in the Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame.
Wolfrum is joined in the Hall by a pair of former NFL players, Ross Tucker and Matt Lytle, former coaches Jack Paris, Al Silveri, and Bill Hartman, and players such as Nolan McCready, Kevin Dice, Dave Cardy, and Marty Stallone.
