Team of the Day: Wilson Bulldogs

2024 Berks football coverage

presented by UECU

Few high school football programs have a resume that rivals the Wilson Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs have been the hallmark of consistency, recoring their 48th consecutive winning season in 2023, the longest active streak in Pennsylvania. They haven’t finished with a losing record since 1963 — that’s 61 seasons ago.

Remarkably, Wilson has had just four head coaches during that streak: John Gurski, Gerry Slemmer, Jim Cantafio and Doug Dahms. Dahms became the winningest coach in program history in 2019, topping Gurski’s mark of 151 victories.

Dahms enters this, his 19th season, with 185 wins and the highest winning percentage (.815) in Berks football history.

The Bulldogs have won more games than any Berks team and have one of the highest winning percentages of any program in the state (.710). Their final win last year, against McCaskey, was their 600th.

They’ll be bidding for their record 30th Lancaster-Lebanon League championship this season.

Wilson has sent four players to the NFL, including quarterbacks Chad Henne and Kerry Collins. Henne owns most of the program’s passing records and was District 3’s leading passer when he left the program following the 2001 season.

Wilson has more than two dozen members in th Berks County Football Coaches Hall of Fame, among them Collins, Henne, Mike Reitz, Gerry and Harold Slemmer, Leroy Schannauer, Rick and Jim Fehling, Brian McCarty, John Gilmore, and Andy Roland.
