Team of the Day: Kutztown Cougars

2025 Berks football coverage

presented by UECU

The Kutztown Cougars enter their 50th season this year much as they did in1976, when their football program debuted: Looking formula that leads to long-term success.

The Cougars ended last season with just one win, and with their 20th straight losing record. They haven’t enjoyed a winning finish since 2004.

Things have looked more promising for the Cougars in recent seasons. They’ve been much more competitive since moving to Section 5 of the Lancaster-Lebanon League in 2022 as they won a pair of league games in each of their first two seasons there and have a total of five in three years.

They departed from the Berks Football League following the 2021 season with a record 67-game league losing streak.

The Cougars have had a trying history, to say the least. They have known just three winning seasons since their debut in 1976. Thirteen times they have gone winless in a season. They had a 41-game losing streak that ended in 2016. Take away a forfeit victory and their on-field losing streak was a freightful 58.

Kutztown earned its first league victory in 13 years when it beat Northern Lebanon 34-28 in Week 7 of the 2022 season; two weeks later it earned a second Section 5 victory, beating Columbia. It finished 1-93 last season, the only win coming in league play, against Columbia.

Despite the struggles the Cougars have had some outstanding individual performances. Both Calvin Laing and Lennon Neiman scored six touchdowns in a game; Laing set the program rushing record with 1,569 yards in 2005.
