Team of the Day: Conrad Weiser Scouts

2024 Berks football coverage

presented by UECU

Back-to-back losing seasons didn’t sit well at Conrad Weiser, which hadn’t experienced such a downturn in more than 40 years.

The Scouts didn’t just get angry, they did something about it: They bounced back from a 2-8 record in 2023 to record a perfect regular season and win 10 games. The turnaround was the greatest in Berks football history.

That 10-0 regular season finish sent them to their first Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 3 championship.

The Scouts got standout senior seasons from their pass-catch duo of Donovan Gingrich and Evan Rittle, who were named, respectively, the Outstanding Back and Receiver of the Year in Section 3. They were among seven first-team all-league picks.

Gingrich set a Berks record for completion percentage by going 11-for-11 in a win over Fleetwood and finished the season completing 66.6 percent of his throws; his 3,653 passing yards are third-most in program history.

The Scouts have an honorable football history and that showed last season as they played with pride and passion.

Weiser has only four head coaches in its 56 years and just 16 losing seasons. Before the downturn in 2023 and 2024 they had finished with a winning record 13 times in the previous 15 seasons.

Scouts head coach Alan Moyer, like his two predecessors, was an assistant coach in the program before taking over the program.

Moyer, entering his 23rd season, has won more games (148) and coached more seasons than anyone in program history.

Ferdie Kuczala was the Scouts’ head coach in their debut season, 1969.

By their third season they had a winning record; by their fifth they went unbeaten. Kuczala’s teams also went unbeaten in the regular season in his final two seasons, 1981 and 1982.

They have recorded three unbeaten regular seasons since and won eight more section or overall league titles.

Before last season, Weiser’s most recent title came in the COVID-truncated 2020 season, when it went 5-0 in Berks League Section 2 play to share first place with Wyomissing. The Scouts finished 6-0 in the regular season, their fifth unbeaten regular season, and averaged a program-record 39.3 points per game.

Among other things, Conrad Weiser football has been known for it’s outstanding running backs. Angel Cruz, Ben Stopper, DJ Robinson, and Koran Jordan have each rushed over 1,400 yards in a season. Codie Butler, who rushed for 1,000 yards three times, has the program record with more than 3,700 yards.

Luke Stopper, considered one of the all-time greats in Inter-County League history, excelled as a defensive back, kick returner, and quarterback in leading the Scouts to a program-record 11 wins in 1996.

Logan Klitsch holds most of the program passing records; his favorite target, Aanjay Feliciano, holds most of the receiving records. Klitsch threw for 2,470 yards in 2021, more than half (1,249) to Felciano. That terrific pass-and-catch combination led the Scouts to the District 3 Tournament in 2021.
