Stewart, Wyo girls put the squeeze on Oley to remain unbeaten in Berks play

Oley Valley and Morgan Snyder found out just how tough it is to score against the Berks Girls League’s top defensive team Tuesday.

The Lynx were held to nine first-half points in a 55-38 loss to the Division III-leading Spartans in a key crossover game at Wyomissing.

Sophomore center Amaya Stewart was a difference-maker on both ends for Wyomissing, dominating the post on defense while matching her career high with a game-high 23 points.

Stewart had 10 points in the first quarter and 15 by intermission, helping the Spartans (6-0 Berks III, 15-1) to a 24-9 lead.

Wyomissing entered the game allowing a league-low 28.1 points per game. It has held four teams below 20 points; it allowed just two points, and no baskets, in its last game, a 56-2 win over Antietam.

The Spartans limited Lynx scoring leader Morgan Snyder to three first-half points and five through three quarters. She scored 14 in the final quarter to finish with 19. She entered the game averaging 14.9 points, third-best in the league.

Ryanne Wheeler, the No. 2 scorer for the Lynx (4-2 Berks IV, 10-5), was limited to two first-half points and six through three quarters. She finished with nine.

Abby Zechman had nine points and Annie McCaffrey eight for the Spartans.

Wyomissing saw its season-opening 14-game winning streak snapped in its last game, 40-33 at Middletown on Saturday.

The loss dropped the Lynx one game behind in the loss column to Berks IV leader Brandywine Heights, which improved to 6-1 in league play with a 40-25 crossover win over Fleetwood Tuesday.
