Stephan Meet preview: Schuylkill Valley’s Luke Martinez looks to stay on top

Stephan Meet Performance List

Saturday’s schedule

Defending champs Brady Mider of Berks Catholic, Luke Martinez of Schuylkill Valley, and Kaitlyn Highduch of Gov. Mifflin are each top seeds in their events for Saturday’s Leonard Stephan Meet at Wilson.

Mider, who went on to capture a gold medal in the shot put at the PIAA Championships, won the shot put and discus last year at the Stephan; he is the lone returning Berks athlete defending multiple titles.

Martinez won the pole vault title; Highduch won the 3200.

Other returning champs include Gov. Mifflin’s Zach Zerbe (3200), Wyomissing’s Collin Niedrowski (javelin), Berks Catholic’s Julia Rosenberger (high jump), and Wyomissing’s Addie Cohen (1600). Cohen is not expected to compete in the 3200.

Martinez enters with the Berks best in three events: The triple jump, long jump, and pole vault. He is the No. 2 seed in the long jump and the top seed in the other two events.

Only one other athlete, Twin Valley’s Addison Nudy, currently owns the Berks best in three or more events. She’ll be competing at home at the Twin Valley Invitational tonight. Nudy owns Berks bests in four events heading into the weekend: 400, high jump, long jump and triple jump.

Just three boys who claimed Berks bests in 2023 own them again heading into the weekend: Twin Valley’s Vincent Acinapura (200), Martinez (long jump) and Mider (shot).

Four girls have that distinction: Muhlenberg’s Nadly Gyapong (200), Wilson’s Violet Houck (100 hurdles), Wilson’s Maddie Henne (discus) and Kutztown’s Lauren Akers (javelin).

Mider, as usual, is miles in front of the competition. In the shot, where he has thrown 61-1, the No. 2 seed is Wyomissing’s Max Tipton, at 48-7.5. Tipton earned a PIAA medal in the event last year.

In the discus, Mider is No. 1 at 160-0. Wilson’s Alex Baez is next at 143-2.25.  Mider will see local competition in the coming weeks. Exeter’s Josiah Newman-Kegerise owns the Berks best in the discus at 169-3.

Martinez is the No. 2 seed in the long jump at 22-2.5, behind Southern Lehigh’s Jack Inglis, at 22-4. Martinez is No. 1 in the triple at 42-5.5; Conestoga Valley’s Thabo Lautsbaugh is No. 2 at 42-1.5. Martinez is the lone 14-footer in the pole vault.

Nine Berks teams are entered for the Stephan Meet: Berks Catholic, Conrad Weiser, Daniel Boone, Gov. Mifflin, Oley Valley, Reading High, Schuylkill Valley, Wilson, and Wyomissing.

Seven Berks teams are entered for tonight’s Twin Valley Invitational: Brandywine Heights, Exeter, Fleetwood, Kutztown, Muhlenberg, Oley Valley and Twin Valley.
