Site, time set for Kutztown state semifinal vs. Mount Union
Kutztown will play in its first state semifinal baseball game in 16 years when it meets Mount Union Monday at Big Spring High School at 4 in the PIAA Class 2A Tournament.
The District 3 champion Cougars (19-6) advanced with a 9-0 win over South Williamsport Thursday at Pine Grove.
The District 6 runner-up Trojans (24-2) had an easy time of it in the quarterfinals, dispatching District 1 champ Calvary Christian 16-1 in four innings.
The win was the fourth straight and 10th in 11 games for the Cougars. Since the start of the district playoffs they have outscored their opponents 33-6.
Mount Union’s only losses this season have come to Bald Eagle, 1-0 in 10 innings in a non-league game May 8, and 11-5 in the District 6 championship game.
Mount Union went unbeaten in Inter-County North play, outscoring its league opponents 183-17. Overall, the Trojans are averaging 10.6 runs per game and have an 8.8 average winning margin.
Kutztown is one win away from reaching the PIAA championship game Friday, June 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Penn State’s Medlar Field. The Cougars’ only appearance in the championship game came in 2007 when they fell to Bald Eagle 6-1.
Mount Union has won four PIAA championships, the most recent in 2019. It has qualified for the state tournament 29 times, has reached the title game six times and the semifinals 13 times.
The Trojans lost in the opening round of state play the last two seasons.
