Saints looking to repeat as BCIAA girls basketball champ (updated, with schedule)

The Berks Girls League likes to repeat itself.

Gov. Mifflin won back-to-back titles in 2019 and 2020. Berks Catholic won back-to-back in 2017 and 2018. The Mustangs took consecutive titles in 2015 and 2016. Wilson won three straight before that.

Berks Catholic is hoping to continue the trend. The Saints won last year’s title, beating Wyomissing 55-45 in the finale. They’re positioned to be the No. 1 seed heading into this year’s tournament, according to the most recent power ratings figures posted on the District 3 website.

The top seed has not fared well in recent years. Over the last five years only Gov. Mifflin, in 2019, brought home a championship.

Berks Catholic, the Division I champ, has qualified for the tournament, along with division champs Twin Valley, Schuylkill Valley and Brandywine Heights, Berks I-II runner-up Wilson, Berks III-IV runner-up Wyomissing and wild card entries Gov. Mifflin and Reading High.

The teams are seeded one through eight based on power ratings, and will remain that way; there were no appleals to the seeding order.

The quarterfinals will be played Saturday on the home court of the higher-seeded team. There will be a semifinal doubleheader Tuesday at Santander Arena. The championship game will be the front end of a doubleheader Friday, Feb. 18, at Santander.
