Reece Garvin leads balanced scoring attack as Exeter beats Gov. Mifflin
Reece Garvin scored 18 points to lead a balanced scoring attack as Exeter won its fourth straight game Friday, beating Gov. Mifflin 79-56 in a Berks Conference crossover game at Reiffton.
It was the only Berks boys game scheduled.
The Eagles (5-2 Berks II, 10-4) placed all five starters in double figures.
Garvin scored seven first-quarter points as the Eagles raced to a 21-7 lead. Exeter led 34-22 at the half.
Zyion Paschall had 13 points, Teddy Snyder 12, Anthony Caccese 11 and Kevin Saenz 10 for the Eagles.
Garvin hit four 3-pointers and the Eagles had 10.
Delsin McNeil scored a team-high 15 points for the Mustangs (2-5 Berks I, 5-12); Tyler Minick had 11.
The 23-point win was the most lopsided in the series since Exeter won 54-27 in 2013-14. Since 2000, Mifflin leads the series 25-23.
Exeter maintained pace with Berks II leader Berks Catholic, which beat Wilson Thursday night. The Eagles are one game behind in the loss column with one game to play against the Saints, Feb. 2 at Wolf Gymnasium. The Saints won the first meeting 73-63 Dec. 22 at Reiffton.
Exeter entered the game ranked No. 4 in the District 3 Class 5A power ratings.
The Eagles are off to their best start in coach Matt Ashcroft’s four seasons. They finished 13-15 last season and reached the PIAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.
The win was the second in the last three meetings for the Eagles; the teams split last season, when they each played in Berks I. Now that Exeter is in Berks II they will meet just once in the regular season.
