The Reading High boys and Wyomissing girls are following Exeter west for the PIAA basketball quarterfinals.
The Red Knights (29-1) will play District 7 runner-up New Castle (24-3) Saturday at 2 at Altoona High School.
The Spartans (28-2) will play District 7 champion North Catholic (24-3) Saturday at 2 at Bald Eagle High School.
Wyomissing and Reading were paired in a doubleheader Wednesday before a packed house at Coatesville.
The District 3 champion Red Knights used a big fourth quarter to pull away from Upper Darby 83-58; they have won 20 straight games. New Castle advanced with a 65-56 win Wednesday over Downingtown West.
The District champion Spartans extended their winning streak to 12 games with a 40-33 victory over Neumann-Goretti. Berks Player of the Year Amaya Stewart came through with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds.
North Catholic advanced with a 51-34 win over Harbor Creek in the state quarterfinals.
Exeter plays Friday at 6 at Bald Eagle High School in Bellefonte in a Class 5A game. The District 3 champion Eagles (25-6) meet Peters Township (24-4).
Exeter advanced with a 66-49 victory Tuesday at Manheim Township. Peters Township, the District 7 runner-up, advanced with a 58-56 winner over Lampeter-Strasburg.
The Eagles have reached the state quarterfinals just once before, in 1973-74 when they made it all the way to the PIAA title game.
Reading High beat Upper St. Clair in a state semifinal at Altoona in 2021 en route to a PIAA championship victory over Archbishop Wood.
