Myles Grey, Red Knights, shoot down Fords in state tournament romp (updated with boxscore)

(This story will be updated later tonight with additional details and postgame reaction.)

Myles Grey put on a shooting display in the opening round of the PIAA Class 6A Tournament Saturday afternoon, hitting eight straight 3-pointers to lead Reading High over Haverford 74-43 at the Geigle.

The All-Berks senior guard finished 8-of-9 from 3-point range and 11-of-14 shooting overall with 30 points, matching his career high. He made his first eight 3-point attempts before missing one early in the fourth quarter.

The District 3 champion Red Knights (28-1) advance to a second-round match-up Wednesday against Upper Darby, a 66-64 winner at Bethlehem Liberty. Upper Darby (19-8) finished sixth in the District 1 Tournament.

Ruben Rodriguez finished with 19 points, had a game-high 10 rebounds and a game-high six assists for Reading, which has won 19 straight.

Grey set the program record for 3-pointers in a game last season when he hit 10 against Twin Valley and scored 30 points. The only other player in Reading history with more than eight 3’s in a game is David Lawson, who established the program record with nine against Conrad Weiser in the 2006-07 season.

Grey was the headliner in a true 3-point shootout that saw the teams combine to knock down 22 shots from beyond the arc.

Googie Seidman carried the Fords (14-14), scoring 27 points and knocking down 7-of-11 shots from 3-point range. He scored Haverford’s first 19 points of the second half, making several shots from 25 feet and beyond.

Rodriguez hit 3-of-5 from 3-point range and Reading weas good on 12-of-18 overall. Haverford made 10-of-16.

The Fords, who finished 12th in the District 1 Tournament, hit four of those in the first quarter and kept pace for the first seven minutes before the Red Knights began to pull away. They scored the final four points of the first quarter and opened the second quarter on a 17-4 run to open a 20-point lead.

The lead grew to 37 late in the third quarter, when Grey hit four 3-pointers, and reached 39 in the fourth quarter.

Grey had five steals in the first quarter, helping the Red Knights force seven turnovers. Haverford turned it over 17 times in the first half and trailed 40-22.

Grey’s season high had been 28 points, against Devon Prep in December; he had four 3’s in that game.
