Muhlenberg, Oley Valley shot down in District 3 play

Sharpshooter Trey Grube hit a pair of 3-pointers in the final minutes as top-seeded Manheim Central pulled away from Muhlenberg for a 64-54 victory in a District 3 Class 5A quarterfinal Thursday at Doe Run Elementary in Manheim.

The game was tied 52-52 with 2:39 left when Grube gave the Barons (21-5) the lead for good with a 3-pointer. The ninth-seeded Muhls (15-10) were outscored 12-2 over the final 2 ½ minutes.

Muhlenberg heads to the playback round where it will face fifth-seeded Warwick Monday at 7 at Lititz.

The winner will meet either Lampeter-Strasburg or Milton Hershey in the fifth-place game.

The Muhls secured one of eight state tournament berths with their first-round win over West York.

Grube, who leads the Lancaster-Lebanon League with 82 3-pointers in 26 games, finished with a game-high 21 points, 10 in the final quarter. He will play at Lancaster Bible College next season.

Jay’Daniel Mosquera and Luis Valentin each scored 13points for Muhlenberg. Xzavion Robertson, Muhlenberg’s leading scorer, finished with a season-low three points.

Aaron Enterline had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Manheim.

Muhlenberg led 14-9 after the first quarter, was ahead by two points at halftime and by one point entering the final quarter. It was outscored 22-11 in the fourth.

Manheim plays No. 4 Mechanicsburg, a 42-39 winner over Warwick, Monday a district semifinal. The winner meets either Exeter or Hershey in the championship game Thursday at 4:15.

The Barons, who earned a first-round bye, reached the Lancaster-Lebanon League championship game before falling to Hempfield 57-46. Manheim won the L-L Section 2 title.

Class 3A

Sophomore Owen Schlager knocked down six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 24 points as second-seeded Trinity built a big early lead in beating Oley Valley 78-51 Thursday in a District 3 Class 3A semifinal at Camp Hill.

The Shamrocks (21-4) hit 14 3’s, including four in the first period as they raced to a 22-7 lead. They were up 41-20 at the half.

The third-seeded Lynx (19-6) head to a state qualifier Monday at Columbia at 7; they’ll be playing for the third and final PIAA Tournament berth out of District 3. A win will send Oley Valley to the state tournament for the first time.

Columbia, the No. 1 seed, lost to fifth-seeded Delone Catholic 54-48.

Chase Rubendall led the Lynx with 14 points. Jaden Kelly scored 12 and Ben DeBalko 11. Kelly scored all seven of Oley’s first-quarter points.

Trey Weiand had four 3-pointers and scored 16 points for Trinity, which will meet Delone Catholic for the championship Tuesday at 7:45 at Giant Center.

The Lynx had won 12 of their previous 13 games. They entered the postseason with 11 straight wins before losing to Exeter 68-35 in a Berks Conference quarterfinal.

The Shamrocks went unbeaten in Mid-Penn Capital Division play before losing to State College 66-40 in the league finals.
