Muhlenberg holds off West York, set to meet top-seeded Manheim Central

Jay’Daniel Mosquera hit 7-of-9 free throws in the final quarter as Muhlenberg held on to beat West York 46-39 Monday in a District 3 Class 5A opener at York.

Mosquera, a senior and all-division pick, finished with a team-high 11 points for the ninth-seeded Muhls (15-9), who snapped a two-game losing streak. Muhlenberg clinched a berth in the PIAA Tournament, its first under second-year coach Matt Flowers and its third in the last five seasons.

Muhlenberg advances to play at top-seeded Manheim Central (20-5) Thursday in a district quarterfinal. The Barons earned a first-round bye.

Mosquera scored nine points in the fourth quarter as the Muhls withstood a charge from the eighth-seeded Bulldogs (17-8), who were eliminated with the loss. Muhlenberg made 8-of-10 from the line in the final quarter. West York got no closer than four in the final quarter.

The Muhls took the lead in the second quarter, when they got 3-pointers from four different players and went into halftime leading 25-21. Luis Valentin hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter and finished with nine points.

David McGladrie, West York’s leading scorer at 13.1 point per game, scored a team-high 11 points Monday, five in the final quarter.

The Muhls were stung in their district opener at Cedar Crest last season, falling 55-54.

The Bulldogs finished first in Section 2 of the York/Adams League and lost to York High in the league semifinals, 47-43.

Manheim Central went 11-1 to win the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 2 title and won a pair of league playoff games before falling to Hempfield 57-46 in the league championship game.

The Barons won 67-57 at Fleetwood in January, handing the Tigers their first loss.
