Mifflin, Muhlenberg top two seeds as Berks baseball playoff open Thursday

Defending champ Gov. Mifflin will open the Berks League playoffs Thursday as the top seed and favorite to win its fourth championship over the last seven tournaments.

The Berks I champ Mustangs (19-1) will open against Berks III runner-up and No. 8 seed Oley Valley (11-7) at Muhlenberg at 4. In the second game at Muhlenberg, No. 5 Wilson (8-9) will play No. 4 Twin Valley (12-6); both are wild card entries.

No. 6 Hamburg (13-5), the Berks III champ, will play No. 3 Exeter (14-5), the Berks I runner-up, at Owls Field at 4. In the second game at Owls Field, No. 2 Muhenberg (16-2), the Berks II champ, will face No. 7 Kutztown (13-5), the Berks IV champ, at Owls Field.

The winners advance to the semifinals Monday at FirstEnergy, as part of a doubleheader. The championship game will be Wednesday at FirstEnergy Stadium at 6.

The eight-team field was finalized last week, with the Mustangs, Muhlenberg, Hamburg and Kutztown clinching division titles, and Exeter, Twin Valley, Wilson and Oley Valley securing the other four quarterfinal berths, via second-place finishes or wild card berths.

Exeter qualified as the second-place team from Divisions I and II; it finished second in Berks I and defeated Berks II runner-up Twin Valley in its head-to-head meeting.

Oley Valley qualified as the second-place team from Divisions III and IV; it finished second in Berks III and defeated Berks IV runner-up Brandywine Heights in its head-to-head meeting.

Twin Valley and Wilson qualified as the next two teams with the highest power ratings.
