Mifflin grad Tyler Minick inches closer to spot in College World Series

Tyler Minick is just two wins away from playing in the College World Series as a freshman.

The two-time Berks Player of the Year homered twice in the Norman Regionals to help the University of Connecticut advance to the Super Regionals.

The Huskies (35-24) will open a best-of-three Super Regional series against No. 8 Florida State at Tallahassee Friday at noon. They’ll play against Saturday at 11 a.m. and Sunday at noon, if necessary. All games are scheduled to be televised by ESPN or ESPN2.

UConn beat No. 9 Oklahoma 7-1 Monday night to punch a ticket to the program’s third Super Regional in program history and second in the last three seasons. 

UConn beat Oklahoma twice in three meetings on the Sooners home field. It defeated the Sooners with timely hitting, superb pitching and elite defense at L. Dale Mitchell Park.

Norman Regional Most Outstanding Player Korey Morton lifted the UConn offense in the fourth inning with a two-run homer, his 27th career home run, to break a stalemate and make it 2-0 Huskies.

After a critical error which allowed Minick to reach with two outs Maddix Dalena notched his first hit of the regional, a two-run homer, to extend the lead to 4-0 in the fourth.

Minick homered Sunday in a 6-4 loss to Oklahoma. Over the four games in Norman he went 4-for-16 and scored three runs.

Minick is batting .264 over 40 games and is tied for third on the team with a .527 slugging percentage. He had nine homers and 28 RBIs.

Minick had a career batting average of .427 over 69 games at Mifflin, with a .541 on-base percentage and .799 slugging percentage. He was a two-time Berks Player of the Year and led the Mustangs to the league championship as a senior.
