Match-ups set for District 3 boys basketball tournament (updated)

Reading High, Berks Catholic and Antietam will enter the District 3 Tournament as No. 1 seeds and earn opening-round byes. Each could face a familiar opponent in its first game.

They are among 12 Berks boys basketball teams that have qualified for the tournament; final official power ratings were posted on the District 3 website earlier today.

Seven of the 12 Berks qualifiers will open on the road; the higher-seeded team earns home court advantage through the semifinals. The championship games will be played at Giant Center.

Opening-round games are Feb. 21 and 22.

Reading High is joined in Class 6A by No. 9 Wilson and No. 12 Muhlenberg.

In Class 5A, Exeter is the No. 10 seed and Fleetwood is No. 13.

Joining Berks Catholic in Class 4A are No. 9 Wyomissing and No. 10 Oley Valley.

In Class 3A, Tulpehocken is No. 3, Kutztown No. 4 and Brandywine Heights No. 6.

Antietam is the top seed in Class 2A.

If the Bulldogs win their opener at No. 8 Waynesboro they’ll advance to meet the Red Knights for the third, or possibly fourth, time. Reading won both the regular season match-ups; they could meet in the Berks Conference championship game.

If the Spartans win their opener against No. 8 Elco they’ll play at Berks Catholic in the quarterfinals. Wyomissing defeated Elco 58-51 on Thursday.

Tulpehocken and Brandywine Heights will meet for the third time in the 3A quarterfinals, at New Schaefferstown. The Trojans won both regular season meetings between the Berks IV rivals.

Antietam could get a semifinal rematch against Greenwood, if the No. 5 Indians beat No. 4 Upper Dauphin in the opening round. The Mounts knocked off the top-seeded Indians 47-36 in a Class 2A semifinal last season.
