Isaac Krick pitches Hamburg into Region 2 Tournament

Isaac Krick threw a five-hitter as Hamburg beat Wyomissing 1-0 Sunday to clinch a spot in the upcoming Region 2 qualifier and avenge a loss to the Warriors at this stage last year.

The Reds stayed alive Saturday night, beating the Warriors 7-2 to extend the Schuylkill-Berks Legion League double-elimination tournament to its final game.

Hamburg snapped a scoreless tie in the top of the seventh when Ricky Clark drew a leadoff walk, the first of three walks in the inning. Nate Gilbert’s two-out, bases-loaded smash to third went for an RBI single. It was Gilbert’s second hit of the day and just the third for the Reds.

The complete game was the first of the season for Krick, who has a 1.59 ERA over 11 1/3 innings in regular season play.

“He was keeping guys way off balance,” said Hamburg coach Nick Evangelista. “He just had them baffled. He threw the ball great.”

Krick needed just 79 pitches, throwing 53 for strikes, to finish the game. He walked one and struck out two.

Wyomissing’s Dominic Colon took a two-hitter into the seventh before walking Clark and giving way to Aidan Cirulli, who finished for the Warriors. Cirulli walked two batters before allowing Gilbert’s single.

Last year Wyomissing came from five runs down to beat Hamburg 6-5, the Warriors scoring six times in the top of the seventh to earn the trip to regionals.

Hamburg last qualified for the Region 2 Tournament in 2019, when it reached the Division 2 state championship game. The Reds won the state championship in both 2017 and 2018. They went unbeaten through the regular season and in the league tournament in 2020 but did not advance because there were no regional or state tournaments that year, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

R.J. Marmolejos doubled and singled for the Warriors.

Hamburg stayed alive Saturday when Austin Miller pitched a complete game in a 7-2 win over Wyomissing at Kutztown’s Bridegam Field.

Miller scattered seven hits and walked just one to even his record at 2-2.

Earlier Saturday Jimmy Nunez had four hits and Darren Brunner pitched a complete game for Wyomissing in a 6-3 win.

Post 625 was eliminated on the opening day of the double-elimination tournament after losses to Hamburg and Wyomissing.

The traditional league championship tournament begins July 23.

Only three teams opted to compete for the spot in the regionals.
