Grey matters again as Reading High beats Gov. Mifflin

With Reading High’s leading scorer still not back on the floor junior guard Myles Grey has taken it upon himself to carry a bigger part of the scoring load.

One game after reaching a career high against Berks Catholic he took it up a couple notches Thursday, scoring a game- and career-high 24 points as the Red Knights knocked off Gov. Mifflin 79-58 in a Berks Conference Division 1 game at Shillington.

Grey became just the third player in program history to hit as many as seven 3-pointers in a game.

“Myles can score it at any point,” Reading coach Rick Perez said after Grey scored a then career-high 19 points Monday in a win over Berks Catholic, “but he just really (chooses) to fill in.”

With Daniel Alcantara and Ruben Rodriguez on the floor, Grey wasn’t needed to provide much offense.

Alcantara, however, has missed four straight games for disciplinary reasons.

He was Reading’s leading scorer after averaging 18.6 points through the first five games, with 27 points in a season-opening win over Imhotep Charter and a career-high 28 in a win over La Salle College.

Grey has helped fill the void since Alcantara left the lineup.

Rodriguez scored 20 points and Xavier Davis 13 for the Red Knights (4-0, 8-1).

Matt Harley led the Mustangs (2-2, 5-5) with 15 points. Delsin McNeil and Gerrell McNeil each scored 10 points for Mifflin.

Joey Chapman, playing for the first time since Dec. 21, scored four points off the bench for Reading. He missed the last three games for disciplinary reasons. Chapman is a three-year starter.

The Red Knights were also again without key reserve Aris Rodriguez, who has missed four straight games.

Grey hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter as the Red Knights expanded their three-point lead to 35-21 at the half.

David Lawson set the Reading record with nine 3-pointers against Conrad Weiser in 2006-07. Jordan Burdine had owned the record after making seven 3’s against Exeter in 2004-05.

The game was the 301st as a head coach for Perez, tying the program record set by Jim Gano, who last coached in 1981. Perez can own the record Monday when the Red Knights play at Harrisburg.
