Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week
If you didn’t know much about Gov. Mifflin’s Shakyla Mayo before the Berks playoffs began, you should now.
All the junior guard did since the BCIAA girls basketball tournament tipped was hit a gamer-winner to knock out the No. 1 seed , score a game-high 19 points in the championship game and be named to the All-Berks team.
That was more than enough to earn Mayo the Utilities Employees Credit Union girls basketball Player of the Week.
“People that don’t know about her, now they know,” Mifflin coach Mike Clark said after the Mustangs’ 47-34 title-game win over Wilson. “I thought Ky did more scoring than she usually does. This team needed her to score and she did that.”
Mayo cemented her All-Berks status with a terrific playoff run. The 5-6 junior had 17 points in a quarterfinal win over Brandywine Heights, then came up clutch in the semifinals against Berks Catholic, going the length of the floor before scoring with 0.6 seconds left.

She took an outlet pass from Elisa Fiore, dribbled down court, briefly lost the handle near the 3-point line, recovered and took it in for the score and a 41-40 lead.
“The only thing I remember is it going in,” Mayo said. “The ball going in the basket and my teammates rushing over all excited about it.”
Three days later she helped the Mustangs claim their third title in four years.
“I saw a different drive than I’ve seen for the rest of the season,” said her sister, Shyanna. “We talked about how much we wanted it.”
Clark has seen Mayo come up with inspired plays all season. She was named Player of the Week earlier this season after coming up with a pair of game-winning plays at the Hershey Holiday Tournament.
“She wants it, man,” Clark said of her intensity. “You can see it when we get off the bus.”
Mayo is the third player this season to earn two Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of Week awards. She joins Caroline Reedy of Berks Catholic and Brandywine Heights’ Addison in that distinction.
Berks League coaches nominate their top players each week. At the end of the season a Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of Year will be selected.
