Gov. Mifflin won a lot of close games last season in going 21-7; the Mustangs won six one-run games and twice won by two runs.
They’ve mostly clobbered their opposition this year but Saturday the Mustangs pulled out another tight one, beating Boyertown 2-1 in eight innings in a non-league game at Bear Stadium.
Hunter Unger’s two-out single in the eighth put the Mustangs (10-0) on top and Alexander Velez pitched a scoreless eighth to pick up the save.
The Mustangs are the only team in District 3 with 10 victories; they are ranked No. 2 in the district in the unofficial Class 6A power ratings, behind Central Dauphin.

Mifflin is averaging 9.5 runs per game and has outscored its opponents by 71 runs. It has won games by 18, 15, 11 and 10 runs.
The Mustangs got 10 hits Saturday and strong pitching from Ethan Grim, who went the first seven innings to pick up the win. He allowed four hits, one run, and a walk and struck out three.
Boyertown took the lead in the second when Max Kneidinger singled and scored on Luke Moser’s single.
Mifflin tied it in the fifth when Bryce Detwiler singled and scored from second on a Jon Radwanski single and a throwing error on the play.
In the eighth, Velez led off with a single, was moved to second on a bunt by Darien Troche and scored on Unger’s single. Velez, Unger, Detwiler and Radwanski each had two hits.
Cole Galloway started for Boyerown and pitched four scoreless innings, allowing three hits.
The Mustangs, in first place in Berks I with a 4-0 record, next playTuesday at Exeter. The Eagles and Wilson are tied for second in the division, each at 2-1.
Mifflin won the last meeting against Boyertown, 7-5, in 2019.
The Mustangs got off to a slow start last season on the way to a Berks League championship. They were 1-2 and 2-3 in the early going before putting on a late-season 12-game winning streak that carried them to the district title game.
