Freshmen Jacob Degler and Aiden Rumpeltin and senior Jordan Unger each drove in three runs as Antietam snapped a 35-game losing streak with a 14-3, five-inning, non-league win over visiting La Academia Charter Tuesday.
Degler, a catcher and the Mounts’ leadoff hitter, went 2-for-2, stole three bases, and scored twice. Rumpeltin, a third baseman, went 2-for-2, stole two bases, and scored twice. Unger, the cleanup hitter and shortstop, went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Nine different players collected a hit for Antietam, which finished with 12 hits and 11 stolen bases.
The victory was the first for the Mounts since 2022 when they beat Conestoga Christian 4-1 in the second week of the season. They didn’t win again that season, finished 0-19 last season and lost their first two games this year.
The Mounts’ lineup is loaded with sophomores and freshman; in fact, there are just two seniors listed on the roster.
Aiden Romberger, a junior, picked up the win, going 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and three runs and struck out six. He did not walk a batter. Sophomore Ayden Grillo came on to get the final out after Romberger had thrown 81 pitches.
The Mounts scored four times in the first and went ahead 12-1 with a seven-run fourth.
Antietam opened the season with a 5-3 loss at Pottstown and a 12-0 loss to Pequea Valley.
This was the season-opener for La Academia, a Lancaster-based school which has fielded a baseball team for just four seasons. It joined the PIAA last year, when it finished 1-11 and was outscored 110-26 last season.
Antietam is the only Berks school on La Academia’s schedule. The teams are scheduled to play against May 9 in Lancaster.
