Fleetwood’s Alexis Hess is UECU girls basketball Player of the Week

By Sean McBryan — MikeDragoSports.com correspondent

Senior and Kansas State commit Alexis Hess scored 44 points in leading Fleetwood to two league wins last week to earn Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors.

Hess scored 18 points in a 54-16 win over Antietam Monday and 26 in a 47-33 win over Schuylkill Valley Thursday. She hit five 3’s across the two victories.

The 6-1 guard’s size and athleticism are problematic for defenders and allow her to grab tough rebounds and block shots; her ability to handle the ball and shoot from the perimeter makes containing her even more arduous.

Hess is second in Berks in both 3-pointers made (38) and scoring average (18.0); she is third in free throws made (66) and is a terrific foul shooter, making 84.6 percent of her shots, tops in the league among players with 40 or more attempts. She has improved dramatically at the line since last season, when she made 66.1 percent.

She has scored in double figures in 16 of 18 games this season. Her career total is now up to 1,358, which is the 42nd highest total in Berks Girls League history.

Hess averaged 19.0 points per game as a junior, second-best in the Berks League. Her 40 3’s were fourth.

She topped 1,000 career points last season and was named to the All-State team for the second time.

Fleetwood was one of five Berks Girls League teams to go undefeated last week, along with Berks Catholic, Brandywine Heights, Oley Valley and Wyomissing.

The Tigers (5-4, 10-8) have won four in a row as they push for a district playoff berth. They enter the week 12th in District 3 Class 4A power ratings; the top 10 make the tournament. They face Conrad Weiser Tuesday, Hamburg Friday, and Wyomissing next Monday.

Fleetwood has been eliminated from Berks playoff contention.

Hess is the first Fleetwood player to earn Utilities Employees Credit Union Player of the Week honors. She was selected once last season.
