Fleetwood’s Aiden Soumas: Weeber/Langdon Team of Merrill Lynch Player of the Week

Aiden Soumas says he doesn’t consider himself much of a scorer; it’s hard to agree with that assessment when you look at the numbers.
He is one of just six players in Fleetwood history to reach 1,000 points, his average of 18.1 points per game is third-best in the league and last week he scored 20 or more points in three straight games.
He scored a career-high 26 in a win over Garden Spot, matched it with 26 Saturday at East Pennsboro and has been named Weeber/Langdon Team of Merrill Lynch Player of the Week for the first time this season. He was named once last season as a junior.
Soumas averaged 24.7 points over the three wins to boost his career total to 1,067; he cracked the 1,000-point milestone last Monday in a home game against Garden Spot. He continued to flash his all-around game as the Tigers extended their winning streak to seven games and their overall record to 18-2.
Soumas shot 61 percent from the field last week and made 5-of-12 shots from 3-point range. He had seven or more rebounds in each of the three games and averaged three assists and two steals for the week.
“His leadership on and off the court has helped us continue our winning ways,” said Tigers coach Terry Sitler. “Whenever we had some adversity, he rallied the team to success.”

The Tigers finished 22-5 last season, with an appearance in the District 3 Class 4A championship game. They went 20-2 in the regular season, the best in program history. A win Tuesday in their regular season finale against Wyomissing will give them their second-best regular season finish.
Fleetwood has won three straight Berks Conference Division III titles with Soumas at the point, going 56-15 in that span. In his four seasons the Tigers have won 67 times; it has been 40 years since the program has enjoyed that kind of sustained success.
Soumas has been a rock throughout that time; he has started all 90 games over the past four seasons.
He has scored 13 or more points in 19 of 20 games this season, the lone exception when he had eight in a 46-34 win over Daniel Boone. He has boosted his scoring average 4.4 points per game this season, up from 13.6 as a junior.
Soumas has committed to play baseball at Kutztown University.
Soumas is the second Fleetwood player selected for the award this season, following Nate Herb. Players considered for Weeber/Langdon Team of Merrill Lynch Player of the Week honors are nominated by their coach or by members of the MikeDragoSports.com coverage team.
