Fleetwood edges Wyomissing in overtime, hangs onto Berks III lead

Nate Herb hit three free throws in overtime as Fleetwood completed a big comeback and remained alone in first place in Division III of the Berks Conference with a 51-46 victory at Wyomissing Tuesday.

The Tigers (4-0, 10-1) trailed by eight points in the first half and were down 39-34 with 2:55 left before Hunter Svoboda and Aiden Soumas came up big.

Soumas scored eight of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and Svoboda had of his 16 points in the fourth quarter and overtime to help the two-time defending Berks III champion Tigers remain on top. Svoboda’s three-point play gave Fleetwood its first lead at 47-46. His tying basket with 5.3 seconds left in regulation sent the game to overtime.

Fleetwood lost the regular season final at Wyomissing last season, 35-34, costing it a perfect run through Berks III.

The Spartans (2-2, 4-5) were looking at another upset Tuesday as Danny Fleischood scored eight first-quarter points and had 10 in the first half to help his team open an 18-10 lead.

The Spartans were still leading 43-40 in the final minute before the Tigers tied it with six seconds left.

Fleetwood outscored Wyomissing 7-2 in overtime. Alex Campbell had the Spartans’ only basket in OT.

Aiden Schippers finished with 11 points for the Spartans, including seven in the final quarter. Herb finished with 12.

The Spartans got to the foul line just twice. The Tigers made 13-of-20 from the line.

Fleetwood’s only loss came Dec. 28 against Octorara, 52-51. Octorara is No. 2 in the District 3 Class 4A power ratings; Fleetwood entered play Tuesday at No. 4.
