Explosive Raiders bidding to become Berks’ highest-scoring team — ever

Twin Valley has produced scoring feats this season never before seen in Berks football.

The Raiders are averaging 54.0 points per game, second-highest in the state and second-most in Berks history.

They’ll be challenged to reach their usual share of points this week when they play at West York in a District 3 Class 4A semifinal.

The Bulldogs’ forte is defense: They are allowing 7.2 points per game, lowest of any team in District 3 and fourth-lowest among Class 4A teams in the state. They have recorded 96 tackles for loss, 32 sacks and 25 takeaways.

“They’re aggressive,” said Twin Valley coach Brett Myers. “They’re (constantly) bringing guys (on blitzes). They play upfield. They’ve given up 80 points in 11 games – that’s phenomenal. They’re really a good unit.”

Veteran West York coach Ron Miller, who won his 100th game earlier this season and has a district championship on his resume, has called it the best defense he’s ever coached.

“Wyo’s very similar in what they do,” Myers said of Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 rival Wyomissing. “Wyo’s edge players are so good, and these guys are the same.

“They’ve got some speed in the back four. It’s comparable. Different leagues, different competition, so it’s kind of hard to tell until you get there. They’ve got athletes all over the field and they play an exciting brand of football. It’s fun to watch.”

So are the Raiders, who have lethal backfield weapons in Drew Engle and Lucas Myers, a quarterback in Maverik Foster who hasn’t thrown an interception all season, and dangerous Ben Grundy – the Receiver of the Year last year in Section 4 – at wide receiver.

Their 54.0 scoring average is second only to Governor Mifflin in 2020. The Mustangs, with Penn State recruit Nick Singleton in the backfield, averaged 54.5 games — but there’s an asterisk attached to that season.

It was “the COVID year,” a season which saw the regular season constantly interrupted by postponements and cancellations, and the postseason truncated.

Mifflin was limited to six regular season games; the season started in mid-September due to a summer-long high school sports shutdown and four scheduled games weren’t played. The Mustangs beat Mechanicsburg 68-14 in the district semifinals but Warwick couldn’t play the district final because of a COVID outbreak at the school.

Mifflin lost its first state tournament game, a semifinal, to Pine-Richland 48-44. Those 44 points were the fewest points it scored that season.

Twin Valley has scored 42 or more points in every game but one, a 28-6 win at Wyomissing. It has scored 60 or more points five times, including three straight; before this season no Berks team had ever scored 60 points more than twice in the same season.

Only 16 teams in Berks history have finished a season averaging 40 points or more per game; the Raiders will become the 17th.

Their 590 points, in 11 games, currently rank as seventh-most in Berks history. All of the teams ahead of them on the list, of course, played more games – at least 13, some 15 or more. The top two, both from Wyomissing, played a full 16-game season that ended in a PIAA championship game.

Because it received an opening-round bye in the District 3 Tournament the most games will Twin Valley will play this season is 15; that would take it to the PIAA championship game on Dec. 4.

Should the Raiders advance to the final game they would need to average a little over 20 points per game to break Wyomissing’s single-season scoring mark of 671 points.

If they’re limited to just 14 games this season they would need to average a little more than 27 points per game to get the record.
