Deven Sheerin said he was happy to see his Exeter baseball team open against second-seeded Gov. Mifflin in the District 3 Class 5A Tournament last week.
The right-hander hadn’t gotten a chance to pitch against the Berks I champs this season and was looking forward to the challenge.
“And it’s not a long bus ride,” he added.
Sheerin was at his best in the Eagles’ biggest game of the season, allowing just one hit over 6 1/3 innings against the league’s top-hitting team. He struck out 11 in Exeter’s 4-1 win and has been named Utilities Employees Credit Union Pitcher of the Week.

Sheerin was removed from the game after reaching the PIAA pitch limit in the final inning but he was completely dominant to that point.
The Mustangs made solid contact on only a few pitches; their lone hit was an infield single.
“That was as good as he thrown all year, because (it came) against a very quality team,” said Exeter coach Justin Freese. “That’s the Berks County champion. He threw a helluva game.”
Sheerin improved to 5-2 in his eighth start. He has struck out a league-leading 88 batters in 40 innings and has allowed just 14 hits.
He opened the season with a five-inning no-hitter in a 10-0 win at Cedar Crest, striking out 14 batters. That also earned him Pitcher of the Week honors.
Good as the Mount Saint Mary’s recruit was in that March 29 opener, Sheerin was even better last week, considering the lineup he was facing.
“This tops the list so far,” Sheerin said, “but every time I go out I want to get better.”
This is Sheerin’s second selection as Utilities Employees Credit Union Pitcher of the Week this season. He was the season’s first selection, on April 3.
