MANHEIM — The tears started flowing for Exeter senior Grace Reedy when she was taken out of the game with 49 seconds remaining in the Eagles’ 46-30 loss Tuesday to Manheim Central.

“I was just thinking about how much I love basketball and how much I put into the sport,” Reedy said after the District 3 Class 5A first-round game at Doe Run Elementary. “These four years have been really special.”

The freshmen duo of Maddie Gehman (21 points) and Gianna Roberts (18 points) led the No. 8 Barons (16-8) into the quarterfinals to face top-seeded York Suburban.

The ninth-seeded Eagles (14-10) saw their season end.

Reedy’s feelings were exacerbated when her name was announced after the game for breaking Cortney Crockett’s program scoring record of 1,389 points. Reedy scored 21 points and finished with 1,403.

The realization that her high school basketball career was over became even more emotional as she stood at halfcourt with a hefty plaque commemorating the accomplishment, her parents by her side.

“She was able to etch her mark, etch history and helped make this program come back in the process,” Exeter head coach Derek Wolfe said. “Her scoring ability is going to be hard to replace, obviously.”

Reedy averaged 6.4 points per game during her COVID-affected freshman season as the Eagles went 2-10 in Berks I and 4-12 overall.

She increased her scoring average to 15.1 her sophomore season but the Eagles won just one league game and went 2-19 overall.

The Eagles moved to Berks II last season and Reedy led the league in scoring at 22.3 points per game; Exeter won the division title with a 7-4 record and finished 11-12.

Reedy again scored over 20 points per game this season and led the Eagles to a second straight divisional titles and to their first district playoff appearance in nine years.

“It feels good that I helped my team get to this point,” Reedy said. “I’m really proud of what we put together and that we made it this far.”

“The girls earned it,” Wolfe said. “They’ve been in the gym working for two years. We’ve come a long way going from two wins to putting up 14.”

Reedy needed eight points to break the record and did so on a 3-pointer with 3:11 left in the second quarter to tie the game 10-10; the Barons finished the quarter on an 8-3 run.

Exeter had 24 turnovers, and they started to negatively affect its offense in the third quarter. A cold shooting streak that saw them go 1-for-10 from the field in the quarter didn’t help, either.

Gehman took advantage with nine of her 21 points in the third as Central outscored Exeter 19-3 and took a 37-16 lead.

“We (had) a scoring drought,” Wolfe said. “We just didn’t put the ball in the bucket for a long stretch and that was just too much to overcome.”

Reedy went out with a bang in the final quarter scoring 10 points but the damage had already been done.

Reedy plans to major in nursing and has already been accepted to both the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State University. She’ll be deciding whether she wants to follow that track or pursue basketball at the Division II or III level.
