Max Oliver’s complete game lifted Misericordia University to a 5-1 win over Lynchburg Monday and into the NCAA Division III championship series.

Gov. Mifflin grad Connor Maryniak went 2-for-6 and reached base five times as the Cougars beat Lynchburg twice Monday, including 3-2, to advance to the best-of-three finals against Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The championship series begins Tuesday at 7, at Eastlake Ohio.

Because of impending weather Game 2 will not be played until Thursday, at 11. If a third game is necessary it will be played Thursday.

Maryniak last pitched on Saturday so he likely will be stationed at shortstop for Tuesday’s opener. He could be utilized on the mound Thursday.

Misericordia (42-10) set a program record with its 41st win Monday.

Maryniak, a junior, is batting .354 and leads the team with 13 home runs and 70 RBIs. On the mound he is 10-3 with a 2.21 ERA. The MAC Freedom Player of the Year saw his 10-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s loss to Lynchburg.

Misericordia had never reached the championship series. Before this season it had won just one game in World Series play. It has won four of its first five games this year.
